It’s May 25th. It’s a bittersweet day for geeks like me.
Two weeks after Douglas Aadams’s death, fan organised a memorial on 25th May 2001. And it’s carried on every year since.
So why a Towel Day? Why not Loofa Day? Well, it’s all to do with The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, arguably one of Douglas Adams most recognised works.
So, RIP Douglas Adams. We still miss you. And I’ll keep my towel on me.
Wear the Lilac Day
Terry Pratchett is possibly my favourite author of all time. I aspire to be like Granny Weatherwax as I grow older. I was devastated by his Alzheimers diagnoses, and even more devastated by his death in 2015.
After his death, Wear Lilac Day was set up. In Pratchetts Discworld Novels, certain members of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, and a few others around the city, wore a sprig of lilac. The 25th of May was the day that they remembered those who fought and fell for hardboiled eggs, truth, justice and reasonably priced love, who died – and in Reg Shoe’s case rose and kept fighting – in the Glorious Revolution of Treacle Mine Road. After his death, Terry Pratchetts fans decided that the 25th May should also be Wear Lilac Day to commemorate him, and raise money for Alzheimers Research. Donations can be made here.
GNU Sir Terry Pratchett. Mind how you go.
